God is generous to humanity.
If you’re looking for the best example of generosity, you need to look no further than God himself.
As Christians, our main pursuit is to become more Christ-like. To be like Christ means to take on his image – to identify with him – in all areas of our lives. We seek to be more loving, forgiving, compassionate among many other attributes, not the least of which is generosity.
He loves when we are generous.
God is the creator of all things on heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. That means all we have and all we are has been given to us by our creator. Everything we enjoy in life is a gift from God, including our wealth.
We could look at this from a very practical level, and in future posts I will do things like that, for today though, I want to stay big picture.
Here are the three biggest gifts our generous God has given to humanity that display the magnitude of his love for us.
1. God The Father Gave Us Jesus
We see first that God is generous by sending his Son to us.
Take John 3:16-18 ESV as an example:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
That’s a lot of love for people who often hate and reject him. God is a generous giver.
2. Jesus Gave His Life
The Son of God is generous when he chooses to lay down his life for our sins. Chooses.
Take a look at what Jesus says in John 10:18 ESV:
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
Wow. Jesus had the authority to tell his Father no and go back to heaven without us.
That’s a lot of love for people who often hate and reject him. Jesus is a generous giver.
3. The Holy Spirit Gives Gifts to His Children
God is generous as the Holy Spirit as he empowers us to live a joy-filled, effective life of service to God and others.
Take a look at 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 NLT:
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
We’re given gifts so we can help each other.
Blessed to Be a Blessing
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” – Jesus. Read my Stories of Generosity series.
God is the source of life and he is our greatest example of generosity.
Like I said, this is a big picture view, but it’s it’s very important for us to remember God’s generosity.
He calls us to be generous. Especially those of us who are blessed financially.
The apostle Paul wrote this to the rich in 1 Timothy 6:18-19 NLT:
Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.
My hope is by reading this today you’ll have more gratitude and awareness of God’s generosity toward you and the resulting blessing in your life – and that will cause you to generously bless others.
